Don't throw your old computer in the trash! Recycle It! FAQ's I’m concerned about my personal data that is stored on my old computer’s hard drive. When I have my computer picked up by Santa Barbara Computer Recycling, what happens to that data? As an additional value added service to our recycling customers, all hard drives are wiped clean using a product called EraserDisk. Not only is the hard drive re-formatted, but zeros are written to the drive to completely erase any personal data on the drive. EraserDisk conforms to Department of Defense standards for erasing of Top-Secret data from government computers. The procedure is preformed on your computer before it is recycled. The Certificate of Reuse/Recycle that you will receive certifies that all identifying marks will be removed and all computer memory devices will be wiped clean. (EraserDisk procedure is preformed at SBCR processing facility, extra charges may apply for erasing your hard drive at pickup time). I don’t have a lot of time, and can’t wait around during the day for the pickup, can you pickup my computer after business hours? OR can I leave my items for you to come by and pick up when I'm not here? We are busy during the day as well, which is why we offer pickups as late as 9pm. When you schedule a pickup, the online form will display available pickup windows. These pickup windows are one-hour blocks of time when you can expect our pickup van to come by. If you would like, you may leave the items with payment, and we will leave a card to let you know we came by. Are you a government agency? We are a private company that supplies a hauling service for used electronic equipment. Our rates are basically the same rates you would pay by taking your used electronic equipment to the Transfer Station (Santa Barbara County Recycling Facility), however we pick up your used electronic equipment at a time that is convenient for you, and we wipe clean your hard drive free of charge. If you charge the same amount as the Transfer Station, how do you make money? We make money by taking advantage of a “Per Ton” recycling rate. Also, the electronic components of your computer may still have some value, and they may be sold as parts, or refurbished and given to local charities. After the computer has its hard drive wiped clean, all harmful electronic parts will stripped out and recycled as electronic components. The remaining metal case is recycled as scrap steel. How much does it cost? Our pricing is constantly changing, so please download a copy of our flyer for our most up to date prices.
